Banana (Cavendish)
Typically green or slightly yellow (depending on ripeness stage for export).
Free from dirt, stains, and chemical residues.
Bananas must be firm, without soft spots or over-ripeness.
No splits, cracks, or deformities.
Free from fungal diseases (like anthracnose, crown rot).
No bruises, blemishes, or scars.
Harvested at the correct stage of maturity to ensure proper ripening after export.
Minimum length: 7.5 inches (19 cm).
Length is measured from the pedicel to the blossom end.
Should be uniform in size and shape.
Generally, 4 to 8 fingers per hand (cluster).
Average bunch weight: 13–18 kg.
Minimum finger weight: 130–150 grams.
Stage of Ripeness: Most exporters use the “Color Index” for bananas, where exported bananas are at Stage 1 or 2 (green).
This allows bananas to ripen during transit.
Cavendish (most common for export).
Other export varieties: Gros Michel, Red Banana, and Williams Hybrid.
